Phone calls were usually unwelcome intrusions into Ravyn’s quiet realm. Almost always it was someone soliciting something – a gadget she didn’t need, personal information she didn’t want to give, or a candidate she didn’t believe would create a brighter future for everyone.

But every once in a while something intriguing came through.

Like today. As she was about to find out.

The ring of the phone silenced, Pyxi leaped up on quiet cat feet to where it sat on its stand. The answering machine whined on tinny speakers through Ravyn’s rather long-winded greeting. Ravyn herself listened with a shoulder slumped against the wall, forehead pressed to its spackled surface. Eyes closed she snatched at the remnants of sleep while she waited. It had been such a strange dream....
